2026- Boston Firefighters Local 718 vs. City of Boston

There’s been another favorable award for Boston Firefighters Local 718 related to the City’s failure to comply with the contractual injury leave process. Over the past couple months, two separate arbitrators have now agreed that the City cannot remove a firefighter from injury leave prematurely without complying with the clear procedure that the parties agreed upon.

In this case specifically, the City elected to remove a member from injury leave without first engaging with an independent medical examiner to determine the cause of his injury. We are glad that these decisions support our ongoing efforts in Boston and around New England to ensure firefighters are receiving the full benefits that they deserve while out of work due to an occupational injury.
